JOURNAL 004

FRIDAY 21 NOV 2025

What’s to come in JOURNAL 004? We head south for a study in Kernow, unpack the history of the Breton stripe, explore the story behind the Afro Linen Trunks and take a look at a sampled wool cap we've been working on.

STUDIES IN KERNOW

The creation of George James has always been rooted in personal expression. It's not just a brand it's the product of my life. It’s shaped by the landscapes I grew up in South Africa, the people I love, and the way I see the world. Everything we make comes from those influences, with a desire to create pieces that feel lived-in and timeless.

For our “Studies in Kernow” series, it felt natural to take the brand somewhere that embodies a similar spirit. Cornwall, and Falmouth in particular, has a quiet, rugged beauty that captures the feeling of George James. Endless coastlines, old harbour towns and a slower pace of life give the place a character.

Falmouth is a meeting point of old and new. Fishing boats sit alongside sailing vessels, students, artists and generations of locals, all sharing the same streets and a deep connection to the sea and marine life.“Studies in Kernow” is a reflection of what we’re building: clothing inspired by real places, made to be lived in, and shaped by the people and landscapes that influence us.

THE BRETON STRIPE OR MARINIÈRE

The Breton stripe, or Marinière, began as a piece of naval uniform before finding a very different life ashore. In 1858, the French Navy formally introduced the blue and white striped knit, designed with precise specifications for sailors at sea to ensure men who fell overboard were easy to spot in the water. Over time, it travelled from the deck to the seaside, becoming synonymous with French coastal style and relaxed elegance.

That journey is something we love at George James. Clothing that begins with a purpose, gathers stories along the way, and eventually becomes part of everyday life. An ode to living well, wherever that may take you.

THE AFRO LINEN TRUNKS

I wanted to create pieces that carried more than just style. Clothes that feel considered, but are made to be lived in.The Afro Linen Trunks are rooted in South Africa, where I grew up. Some of my earliest memories are of long days on game drives, with giraffes moving quietly across the horizon. That image has always stayed with me.

The subtle giraffe print hidden inside the pockets is a small nod to home, but the idea behind the pants is much simpler, they are made for everyday life. Slow mornings, long afternoons, weekends away, and wherever the day happens to take you.For me, that’s part of living well. Wearing good things often, and letting them become part of your story.

Made for livin’.

WOOL GJ 'BABY BRIM' HAT (SHORT BRIM)

Our first sample of the Wool GJ Baby Brim. Made from soft wool, it’s incredibly comfortable from the first wear, with a shortened brim and unstructured crown that lets it sit naturally on the head. Over time, the wool softens further and the cap gradually takes on the shape of your head, making each one feel a little more personal with wear.
