JOURNAL 003

SUNDAY 31 AUG 2025

In JOURNAL 003, we head to Indonesia, diving beneath the reefs of Raja Ampat and chasing waves in Bali. We reflect on the places that push us beyond the familiar, the moments that stay with us long after the journey, and the spirit of exploration at the heart of George James.

AN ODE TO EXPLORE

“To see the world, things dangerous to come to, to see behind walls, draw closer, to find each other, and to feel. That is the purpose of life.”

I remember hearing this quote in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty a film I’d recommend to anyone who finds themselves drawn to adventure, and one that has been a constant source of inspiration for me. There’s something about the idea of stepping outside the familiar, seeing what lies beyond, and allowing yourself to simply experience a place that has always resonated with me. On our recent journey through Indonesia, that quote came to life.

In Raja Ampat, diving beneath the surface felt like peeling back one of those walls. Vibrant reefs, countless species and a kind of silence that can only be found underwater. It was a reminder that sometimes the most beautiful things are the ones you have to go looking for, and that there is always more to discover beneath the surface.

SIMPLE LIVIN'

This was home. A small wooden hut sitting above the water, surrounded by nothing but jungle and ocean. It was a long way from the comforts of everyday life, but there was something incredibly refreshing about it.

There was something incredibly refreshing about it. You wake up, step outside and the ocean is quite literally beneath you. Your days become centred around the simplest things, swimming, exploring, eating, watching the sun go down and doing it all again the following day.

Some nights, the weather had other plans. Thunderstorms would roll through and the rain would come down so heavily that you genuinely wondered whether the hut would still be standing by morning. But somehow, that only made the experience more memorable. You were completely exposed to the elements, with nothing to do but sit back and listen to the storm pass.

It reminded me that sometimes stepping away from everything is exactly what you need. There was no need for much, just somewhere to sleep, somewhere to swim and a new place to explore each morning. In its own way, it was another reminder of why we travel in the first place.

TRIAL & ERROR

A quick glimpse at the new Linen Trunks, releasing next month. We’ve spent the last few weeks testing them, wearing them and making a few little adjustments along the way. So far, they’ve passed the test. Comfortable, breathable and made for long days in the sun, with just a few final tweaks before they’re ready to make their way to you.

Until next time.
